Company News >> Samsung Display, LGD Consider "Low Refractive Index CPL" for OLEDs to Improve Light Efficiency
Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly studying the application of low refractive index CPL to the auxiliary layer of small and medium-sized OLEDs. Adding low refractive index CPL to the already applicable high refractive index CPL can improve light efficiency and have a positive effect on product life. p&h tech and other Korean CPL suppliers are also targeting the low refractive index CPL market.

On the 21st, according to the industry, Samsung Display and LG Display, etc. are discussing the additional application of low refractive index CPL (Capping Layer) in small and medium-sized organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The two panel makers are conducting low refractive CPL tests with several OLED material companies.

CPL is an auxiliary layer formed on the cathode of the functional layer that emits light in OLEDs.CPL reduces the light loss that occurs when light emitted from the OLED's light-emitting layer is repeatedly reflected from the electrodes (cathode, anode) and helps light to be directed toward the display. Currently, CPL used in small and medium-sized OLEDs has a high refractive index.

Samsung Display and LG Display, among others, plan to add low refractive CPL applied to small- and medium-sized OLEDs to play a role in gathering light along with the existing high-refractive CPL. Since light is scattered in all directions, such a program can further reduce light loss.

However, adding a low-refractive CPL may add an auxiliary layer, which can lead to process and price, among other things, becoming an obstacle. If the two panel companies want to apply low-refractive CPL to small- and medium-sized OLEDs, they will have to convince end customers such as Samsung Electronics and Apple.

Companies challenging low refractive index CPL include dongjin samchems, rapto, and p&h tech. Taking high refractive index CPL that has been mass-produced in recent years as a benchmark, dongjin samchems, rapto, etc. are in the supply chain of Samsung Display. rapto supplies high refractive index CPL materials to solus, which delivers them to Samsung Display after sublimating and refining the materials. It is reported that rapto wants to directly deliver the low refractive index CPL it produces. pnh tech is a supplier to LG display.

It is reported that these companies that are developing low refractive index CPL have already carried out processes such as sample delivery to panel companies. Due to differences in product development and characteristics among the companies, it is expected that quality and price, as well as other special relationships, will be taken into account in the process of determining the final supplier. Low-refractive-index CPL is expected to be prioritized for use in small- and medium-sized OLEDs such as smartphones and IT products.

On the other hand, small- and medium-sized OLED materials are stacked anode (Anode) - positive null injection layer (HIL) - positive null transmission layer (HTL) - light-emitting layer (EML) - electron-transport layer (ETL) - electron-injection layer (EIL) - and cathode (Cathode) in order from bottom to right. These functional layers have the optimal luminescence conditions required to achieve electrical and optical properties and are therefore difficult to change easily. the CPL forms an auxiliary layer on the cathode that compensates for optical properties.
