On the 23rd, LGD Guangzhou 8.5-generation OLED factory held a mass production ceremony, officially launching the mass production of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) in Guangzhou. It has been about one year since the completion of the project in August last year. LGD President and Chief Executive Officer Jung Ho-young and other major business teams and management personnel attended the event.

LG Display held a plant completion ceremony in Guangzhou last August, and it was originally planned to be fully launched within this year. However, due to changes in OLED organic materials and other reasons, the schedule has been postponed, with the goal of mass production in the first quarter of this year. Afterwards, due to the impact of COVID-19, the plan again went wrong. Since March of this year, LGD has successively invested in technical personnel to go all out to improve efficiency. With the preparation of mass production conditions in the second quarter, mass production will begin this month.

The factory will invest 60,000 sheets of mother glass per month in the initial stage and gradually expand to 90,000 sheets per month. Therefore, LG Display’s large-scale OLED production capacity will be maintained at a monthly level of 130,000 sheets in the short term, based on the existing Paju factory’s 70,000 sheets per month.

The Paju plant produces panels of 48, 55, 65, and 77 inches. In addition, it is also expected to introduce the MMG process to expand the scale and save costs. Using MMG, with the 8.5-generation production line as the standard, two pieces of 77 inches and two pieces of 48 inches can be manufactured.

According to the latest "Monthly Tracking of Global TV Panel Market Shipments" released by RUNTO, in the first half of 2020, global TV OLED panel shipments reached 1.6 million, and annual shipments will be reduced from 5 million to 4 million pieces, a reduction of 20%, but still a significant increase of 33% year-on-year. In the future, by 2025, global TV OLED panel shipments will exceed 12 million.

Currently, the OLED TV camp has become unstoppable. It was shown at the previous Skyworth conference that starting with LG Electronics, China’s Skyworth, Konka, Changhong, Hisense, Japan’s Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, Funai, Europe’s Philips, Grundig, Loewe, Metz, B&O and other companies are Production of OLED TVs. This year, Vizio from the US, Sharp from Japan, Huawei from China, and Xiaomi also joined.
