According to IHS Markit (Nasdaq:INFO), a global leader in critical information, analysis and solution, smart phone brands will increase the use of fingerprint sensors under the screen, so that mobile phones can be introduced into a full-screen display while also having invisible fingerprints on the front of mobile phones. According to IHS Markit's latest “Display Technology and Market Report for 2018 Screens”, it is expected that in 2018, smart phone shipments using under-screen fingerprint sensors will reach at least 9 million units, and by 2019 will exceed 100 million units. In the next three years, the market will continue to maintain rapid growth; Vivo, Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung and other leading smart phone brands will be the first to introduce and stay at the forefront of the market.
When the fingerprint sensor is integrated under the display of the smartphone, the mobile phone can provide positive and invisible fingerprint recognition to the full screen of 18:9 or higher ratio. The first smartphones that used the fingerprint sensor under the screen (including the Vivo X20 and X21 and Huawei Mate RS) were launched in late March. It is expected that more models will be available in the second half of 2018.
Apple was the first company to introduce fingerprint technology as the main biometric function; in 2013 Apple introduced Touch ID on the iPhone. Subsequently, the Android system officially supported fingerprint recognition from the system side in 2015. These factors have caused the rapid growth of fingerprinting applications in the past few years. At the same time, due to the convenience of fingerprint identification and intuitive usage, it is popular with consumers. Of the total smartphone shipments in 2017, about 60% of the smartphones used fingerprint identification technology.
Because users prefer a better visual experience, smart phone brands promote a full screen that can display more content. However, it is difficult for early models to juxtapose full-screen, fingerprint sensors on the front of the phone. The fingerprint sensor on the back is a compromise solution to overcome the limitations of full-screen smartphones. Now that there is an under-screen fingerprinting solution, the sensor can return to the front of the smartphone.
“With Vivo and Huawei recently introduced several models that use under-the-screen fingerprint recognition technology, under-the-screen fingerprint recognition technology is undoubtedly becoming a new trend,” said Calvin Hsieh, director of touchscreen and user interface research at IHS Markit. "The positive attitude of the Chinese smart phone brand will put pressure on Samsung, but Samsung may not have finally decided whether to adopt this solution in its Galaxy Note 9."
IHS Markit predicts that if Samsung applies under-the-screen fingerprinting to the Galaxy Note 9, smartphone shipments using this solution in 2018 will increase from the current forecast of 9 million units to more than 20 million units.
Almost all fingerprint IC manufacturers are interested in developing under-the-screen fingerprinting technology because their margins are currently much higher than those of silicon wafers. Leading solution manufacturers include Synaptics, Goodix, Qualcomm, and Egis, followed by Samsung LSI, FPC, VkanSee, CrucialTec, BeyondEyes, and FocalTech. Among the panel makers, Samsung monitors with mature Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) panel manufacturing technology dominate, followed by BOE. Because the fingerprint technology under the screen can only be used for AMOLED, the two companies are quite active in the development of AMOLED screen fingerprint technology.
