                                             Sharp is one of the leading players in the development of IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) backplane technology in the global TFT LCD panel plant, and one of the goals of Hon Hai's merger with Sharp is to obtain IGZO technology. DIGITIMES Research believes that although IGZO backplanes currently account for a relatively small proportion of LCD monitors, they have large-scale mass production, high resolution, power saving, integration with OLEDs, development of freeform displays, and even non-display medical applications. If Ruo Hon Hai invests funds to increase the scale of IGZO mass production, the IGZO market share is expected to increase.
IGZO has a wide range of applications, from small to large sizes. In the case of large-size LCDs, IGZO can be manufactured with a capacity comparable to that of the 8-generation line (inclusive) and has a small number of processes (comparable to a-Si TFTs). From the point of view of Sharp's volume products, it has sold 85 吋 8K displays, and is expected to cooperate with Japan's 8K television broadcasting schedule in 2018 and will sell 8K TVs.
For small-size LCDs, Sharp also used IGZO features to improve the performance of the above specifications in response to high-definition and power-saving requirements for smart phone panels. In terms of fineness, because IGZO electrons move fast (20-50 times as much as a-Si), it is advantageous for the miniaturization of thin-film transistors (TFTs), thereby improving the fineness of display panels. Its prototypes can reach 806ppi, and there are opportunities for the future. Up to 1,200ppi; In terms of power consumption, IGZO can intermittently shut off the current when it is in a static state, and does not need to maintain the fully open state, so it can significantly reduce the power by 80%~90% (compared with a-Si LCD panel) ).
In addition to general LCD displays, IGZO can also develop curved, flexible, and OLED display technologies. IGZO can be fabricated on a flexible substrate due to its low temperature process, and IGZO can be used in place of an LTPS substrate to form an OLED panel in combination with an OLED material. Sharp prototype products include 3.4” flexible OLED and 664ppi high-resolution OLED panels.
In addition to the display area, IGZO backplanes can also be introduced into non-display medical applications such as X-ray image sensors. Compared with traditional X-ray detectors, the light and the charge are directly converted, and the image is more clear. Because IGZO itself has high-speed movement and low leakage current characteristics, it can reduce the shooting time, and thus reduce the X-ray exposure; Coupled with high-precision easy to identify subtle lesions, this is a potential opportunity for the development of IGZO technology in the medical field.
