Company News >> Large-size TFT LCD panel shipments hit a record high in the second quarter 29th,March,2018
DisplaySearch Shanghai Office, August 11, 2010 - Shipments of TFT LCD panels larger than 9.1 inches in the latest quarter reached 170 million units, a new record, up 9% from the previous quarter, compared to the same period last year Growth rate increased by 31%; overall revenue reached $22.9 billion, becoming the second-highest quarterly record in history According to the latest Quarterly Large Area TFT LCD Shipment and Forecast Report, despite recent panel price declines and supply chain inventory adjustments affecting demand, Panel makers still have high expectations for shipment growth in the second half of this year.
"Because of the strong buying plan and inventory preparation made by downstream manufacturers, TFT LCDs reached new highs in the second quarter of 2010, and the capacity utilization rate of suppliers was full," said Xie Qinyi, Vice President of DisplaySearch Greater China Markets. "However, overoptimism in the second quarter will lead to some adjustments in the third quarter. The panel prices in the third quarter will drop sharply due to reduced orders and ambiguous demand forecasts."
Except for the panels for public displays, all LCD panel shipments in the second quarter grew from the previous quarter. The panel for LCD displays is the least developed of the three major TFT LCD applications, and its growth rate began to decline in mid-June. Shipments of notebook computers, including mini-Notes and tablet PCs, grew the most in the second quarter, up 15% from the previous quarter. At the same time, the panel of LCD TVs, including LCD monitors with less than 26-inch display panels, shipped 55 million in the second quarter, setting a record high.

In the second quarter of 2010, Samsung’s large-size TFT LCD panel revenue led all manufacturers, with shipments amounting to US$6 billion accounting for 26.3% of the global market share. LG Display ranked second with revenue of US$5.4 billion, accounting for 23.4% of sales in the global market. AUO ranked third with sales of US$3.7 billion, accounting for 16.2% of the global market share, followed by Chimei Innolux, with a global market share of 15.8% and sales of US$3.6 billion.
From the perspective of shipments in the second quarter of 2010, LC Display is the company with the most shipments, while Samsung leads the shipments. In terms of shipments, compared to 47.2% market share in the first quarter of 2010, Korean manufacturers remained the largest supplier of large-size TFT LCD panels in the second quarter of 2010, accounting for 46.5% of the total. market share. The market share of Taiwanese manufacturers slightly decreased from 42.7% in the first quarter of 2010 to 42.5% in the second quarter. The market share of mainland China rose from 4% in the first quarter of 2010 to 5% in the second quarter of 2010. Table 3 indicates the shipment rankings for the second quarter of 2010. This ranking is based on the large-size TFT LCD panels used by various applications.

Looking ahead, as panel prices continue to decline, panel makers believe that shipments in the third quarter of 2010 will continue to grow. On the one hand, downstream manufacturers are gradually adjusting, and then need to purchase more panels. At the same time, most brand owners will increase their panel purchases in preparation for the fourth quarter sales peak. In particular, panel makers believe that the shipment growth target for the third quarter of 2010 will be 8% higher than the second quarter, which means that even if shipments decline in July and August, panel makers will demand for the market in September. There is still a high degree of confidence.
The Quarterly Large Area TFT LCD Shipment and Forecast Report in the third quarter of 2010 also pointed out other key trends:
In the second quarter, shipments of 9.7-inch iPad panels reached 2.8 million units, and supply continued to be tight. Samsung and LG Display are the main suppliers, and the combined shipments of both parties are expected to reach 15 million units this year. However, in addition to the 9.7-inch slate PC, shipments of mini-note PC panels will decline from the first quarter to the third quarter, and will continue to show a downward trend in the second half of 2010.
Based on the shipping area, shipments in the second quarter of 2010 will reach 27 million square meters, which is 8% higher than the previous quarter.
After deducting <26 inches LCD display panel for LCD TVs, Samsung is the LCD TV panel shipment champion.
The average selling price per square meter in the second quarter of 2010 was US$849, which represented a slight increase compared with US$836 in the first quarter of 2010. However, due to the decline in panel prices, the average price per square meter in the third quarter of 2010 is expected to be less than US$800.
Compared to the average shipment diagonal size of 22 inches in the first quarter of 2010, the second quarter of 2010 fell slightly to 21.9 inches.
Based on the application and shipping area, LCD TV shipments accounted for 64% of all applications, LCD monitors accounted for 22%, and laptop/slate accounted for 13%.
