April 24 news, according to market research company DisplaySearch, January global TFT LCD plant capacity utilization rate fell to a record low of 50%, but there are signs of improvement. The capacity utilization rate in February was 62%, which rose to 69% in March and is expected to reach 79% in the second quarter.
The company believes that the slowdown in production capacity expansion, coupled with a drop in demand, should help the market to be closer to a balance between supply and demand in the second half of 2009.
South Korea and Taiwan account for the majority of TFT LCD production capacity and will maintain this dominant position for a considerable period of time in the future. China currently accounts for less than 4% of total production capacity, but it should grow to around 7% by the end of 2011.
DisplaySearch analyst Charles Annis said in a statement: "The industry will take some time to digest all excess capacity. On the other hand, some positive trends, such as China's economic stimulus plan, are creating new LCD TV demand and improving factories. Capacity utilization, stable module prices, and increased opportunities to sell processing equipment in China. These signs indicate that the worst stage may have passed and the industry fundamentals will gradually improve during the rest of the year."
