The LCD game and OLED display game, may the victory of the latter ended. According to industry sources, LGD is accelerating out of the LCD panel, the focus should be changed to OLED.
According to the Korea Business Daily, LG recently closed the 5th generation P4 plant in Gumi, another closed LCD production line after the 3.5 generation P2 plant. Expected before the end of the 4th generation line P3 plant will also be closed.
LG currently does not disclose the closure of the factory will be adjusted, but observers generally believe that will be based on the upgrading of existing equipment, switch to OLED.
According to Han Sang-beom, vice chairman of LG Display, there is no longer any investment in LCD technology for the company so far. And by 2020, they are expected to come up with a total of about 120 billion yuan for the development and production of OLED, including but not limited to Paju's P10 / E6 line, Gumi and Guangzhou's E5 line.
LGD currently holds the 8th generation LCD panel plant (P8, P9) as the main production line, has introduced a variety of differentiated products such as ultra-large high-resolution UHD TV panels and displays. The company plans to invest 20 trillion won (equivalent to 18.8 billion U.S. dollars) in the OLED industry by the end of 2020. The plants include P10 and E6 in Paju, E5 in Gumi, and a plant in Guangzhou, China.
LGD, on the other hand, has recently started to add OLEDs to lower-end OLED panels. According to DB Securities research, LGD will see a 8.5 trillion won investment in OLED equipment next year, up 21.4% from the previous year, aiming to reach 37,500 pieces of small and medium-sized OLEDs a month.
